VGDE 2000

VGDE 2000 — Worldwide Global Monetary Unit (concept)

VGDE 2000 is a conceptual model of a supranational monetary unit for settlement and reserves, formulated at the transition from the 1990s to the 2000s during discussions about reforming the global financial system. The VGDE 2000 concept emerged in response to the limitations of the dollar-centred model, the growth of cross-border economic ties and the need for a more stable mechanism for international settlements.

Underlying VGDE 2000 was the idea of a universal monetary unit belonging to no state, used for interstate settlements, clearing, accounting for international obligations and balancing the global economy. It was envisaged as relying on a basket of currencies and macroeconomic indicators, as well as international agreements, rather than the sovereign issuance of any single country.

VGDE 2000 was not an official currency, an international standard or a recognised unit of account of international organisations. It was a theoretical and programmatic model that influenced the later development of ideas about special drawing rights, multicurrency clearing systems, central bank digital currencies and modern concepts of supranational settlement units.

In a historical and conceptual context, VGDE 2000 may be regarded as an early stage in the evolution of global financial instruments, preceding the development of a new generation of digital, tokenised and intelligent settlement systems, including models of universal reserve and settlement units of the XXI century.
